Recently, we collaborated with the Filtration and Separation Division of Thermo Fisher Scientific and ran filtration tests on a Kölsh beer we brewed at our facility. We filtered the beer from a bright beer tank through several filter media types to better understand how we can best incorporate filtration into our brewing equipment portfolio.
Beer Filtration Test
Beer was filtered through 47 mm disks using our field evaluation system (pictured above). The beer was first filtered through a 1.0 and 0.5 um Thermo Fischer Scientific High Flow filter disks. Both the 1.0 and 0.5 um produced a visibly clearer but slightly hazy beer with a well-rounded taste.
A final polishing step was run on beer prefiltered through a 1.0 um High Flow Filter cartridge. This prefiltration step is typically recommended to protect the final filters and prevent rapid fouling.

Beer Filtration Test Results
A large sample of beer was filtered through a 1.0 um filter, kegged and served at our Brew Day event for the attendees to sample and enjoy. The results of these tests provided a much clearer beer with a lighter body.
This level of filtration removed yeast from the beer and allowed us to reduce the typical lagering time by over 50%.
After this demonstration, several breweries that attended the celebration started evaluating filtration to reduce lagering time and increase capacity.
